Empowering Voices: A Global Initiative Against Sexual Harassment
This project was completed with Andi Counts at Veridian Design Group, LTD.
In collaboration with The Carter Center, I spearheaded a pivotal graphic design project aimed at combating sexual harassment in the workplace. Tasked with creating impactful posters to be displayed in The Carter Center's field offices worldwide, my goal was to shed light on this pervasive issue and empower individuals to speak out against such behavior.
The Challenge: Addressing the sensitive nature of sexual harassment required a thoughtful and culturally inclusive approach. The challenge was to design posters that transcended language barriers and resonated with diverse audiences across the globe. The posters needed to be both approachable and powerful, encouraging individuals from various backgrounds to identify with the message and find the courage to report incidents.
The Process: The journey began with extensive brainstorming and ideation sessions. Delving into various concepts, we explored ways to visually represent the universal struggle against sexual harassment. The chosen concept, which underwent rigorous refinement, consisted of two distinct posters.
The first poster features a captivating graphic illustration of a woman composed of different fabrics, representing the multitude of cultures affected by sexual harassment. The layers signify the depth of the issue, emphasizing that it extends beyond borders. The intention was for individuals worldwide to see themselves reflected in the image, fostering a sense of solidarity and shared responsibility.
The second poster takes a modern vector-based approach, depicting a diverse group of individuals raising their hands in unity against sexual harassment. This illustration, focusing on both men and women, aims to convey a clear message of zero tolerance while maintaining an approachable and friendly demeanor.
The Solution: After numerous iterations and collaborative efforts at Veridian Design Group, LTD., the finalized posters now stand as a powerful testament to The Carter Center's commitment to eradicating sexual harassment. The bold message, prominently displayed on the posters, outlines a zero-tolerance policy and provides clear guidance on reporting incidents.
The culmination of this project is not just the creation of visually striking posters but the successful translation of a crucial message into a language that transcends borders. The posters have been printed in English, French, and Spanish, ensuring a global reach and impact. Distributed throughout The Carter Center's field offices, these posters serve as beacons of empowerment, encouraging individuals to stand up against sexual harassment and report any unacceptable behavior.
Collaborating closely with Creative Director Andi Counts, this project represents a harmonious blend of creativity, sensitivity, and global consciousness, reflecting a shared commitment to fostering a workplace free from harassment.
The poster reads: "Stop Sexual Harassment. The Carter Center has a ZERO tolerance policy. Examples of unacceptable behavior include making physical or verbal sexual advances, using vulgar language, and displaying sexually suggestive images. Report sexual harassment to your supervisor or send an email to OOSexualHarassment@cartercenter.org."
